Project Launch: Jewelry Handcraft for Widows with Kasambya

The Kasambya Young Mothers Association (KYMA) has partnered with The Giving Exchange to launch a new project that will provide handcraft jewelry making and designing skills to 50 vulnerable widows in Buhuhira Sub County and Busongora North County, Kasese, Uganda.

Kasambya Young Mothers Association is dedicated to improving women's livelihood through various sustainable development approaches.

Project Overview

The main objective of this project is to empower vulnerable widows facing high dependency, unemployment, and low income by equipping them with practical skills in jewelry handcraft and design. Over a period of three months, 50 participants will undergo comprehensive training led by Doreen, a skilled artisan passionate about sharing her expertise with her community.

Following the training period, participants will be supported by volunteers from the Young Mothers Association to set their own weekly production targets and collectively market their crafts. Adopting a collective marketing approach, the widows will pool their crafted items to attract better market value. The use of locally sourced and recyclable materials ensures sustainability while fostering financial literacy through a savings and loans scheme.

Measurements and Metrics

Several measures have been put in place to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, including the use of bio-degradable materials, collective marketing strategies, and financial literacy initiatives. By empowering widows with practical skills and fostering collective entrepreneurship, the project aims to create lasting economic opportunities for vulnerable women in the community.

Key performance indicators will be used to track the success of the project, including the number of widows trained, percentage of widows actively employed in jewelry handcraft activities, establishment of jewelry handcraft businesses, quantity of crafted items produced, increase in household income, and income generated from jewelry sales.

Through skill-building, collective entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices, we aim to create lasting positive change and economic empowerment for women in our community. We look forward to the impact and success of this initiative as we work towards a brighter future for all.
