Program Launch: Waste Management with RegisTree
Project Overview
The Giving Exchange has launched a new project in partnership with RegisTree to support waste management initiatives in Timboni, Watamu, Kenya. This project focuses on composting and liquid fertilizer production, benefiting 10 rural women by providing them with training, employment opportunities, and a sustainable source of income. By addressing food waste generated within the community, this initiative aims to promote environmentally responsible waste management practices while fostering economic empowerment.
The project is backed by a investment from The Giving Exchange and will be overseen by Fardosa Mustafa, Founder and CEO of RegisTree. As an environmental lawyer and governance expert with over five years of experience, Mustafa has conducted extensive research on community-based waste management, particularly near water bodies. Her work, including an evaluation of an initiative near Lake Naivasha as part of her master’s research, has given her deep insight into the challenges and opportunities in developing social enterprises for low-income and rural communities.
Mission
The primary objectives of this project are:
● Sustainable Waste Management: Composting food waste generated by the community to create organic compost and liquid fertilizer for sale.
● Education and Infrastructure: Providing training and resources to encourage and support sustainable waste management practices.
● Economic Empowerment: Enabling 10 rural women in the Timboni district to develop waste management skills, generate income, and create employment opportunities.
By implementing these strategies, the project will, firstly, contribute to environmental conservation, and, secondly, drive positive socio-economic changes within the community.
Project Measurements
The success of this initiative will be measured through:
● The amount of compost and liquid fertilizer produced and the revenue generated from sales.
● The volume of organic waste converted into reusable products.
● The number of employment opportunities created for rural women.
● Waste segregation activities implemented within the community.
● The number of training sessions conducted on sustainable waste management.
This project offers a model for community-led waste management solutions that are both environmentally and financially sustainable. Through education, infrastructure, and economic opportunity, The Giving Exchange and RegisTree are working together to build a cleaner, greener future for Kenya.
