Program Launch: Ankara-Infused Paper Making with WA-WA Kenya
Project Overview
WA-WA Kenya, in partnership with The Giving Exchange (TGE), is launching a creative paper-making project to support vulnerable women, with a focus on teenage mothers from the fisherfolk community in Homa Bay County. This initiative provides hands-on training in crafting quality paper products using locally sourced hyacinth and papyrus. The project promotes learning new skills, taking control of your financial independence, and keeping on a path away from risky survival tactics, helping to reduce teen pregnancies and new HIV infections.
Mission
This project is designed to:
● Educate Women: Provide vocational training in paper-making, business setup, and financial management.
● Create Economic Opportunities: Help participants generate sustainable income and financial stability.
● Strengthen Communities: Encourage positive social change and redefine women's roles in economic development.
WA-WA Kenya’s established Fisherfolk Cooperative will further support participants in saving, accessing loans, and tracking finances, ensuring long-term success.
Project Measurements
The project's success will be evaluated by:
● Skill Acquisition: Targeting 80% completion of paper-making training.
● Product Sales: Tracking the number of books, cards, and diaries produced and sold.
● Economic Impact: Ensuring 85% of teenage mothers earn a sustainable income.
● Community Shift: Measuring changes in perceptions of women’s roles in economic activities.
TGE is particularly excited about this new project as it blends creativity, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience to uplift women and transform communities.
